“They always show the guys shouting “Death to America!!” Just once I wish the media would show us, I don’t know, baking a cookie. I’ve been to Iran, we have cookies, I swear. Just once, I want the media to be like, “Okay, we’re going to go to Mohammed in Iran” and then a guy would appear like “Hello, I’m Mohammed… and I’m just baking a cookie.””

They spied on the movements of bailiffs and rent-collectors, barricaded their homes, put the furniture of evicted people back into the houses as soon as it was pitched out, and even had actual fights with the factors. The men came out from the big shipyards and works and the government, finding that their promises of inquiries and legislation did not satisfy the workers, or prevent more men from stopping work, were forced to pass the first Rent Restrictions Act, while the landlords had to withdraw the increase. As one of the workers’ delegates said, ‘The country can’t do without 8,000 workers, but the country can do without the factors.’”

Remojadas Double-Faced, Triple-Eyed Head.

Two heads merge and overlap to form this double-faced, triple-eyed head. Its unusual form manifests the concept of dualism that is found in some Pre-Columbian thought. In order to reconcile the dualities, or opposites, such as life/death, youth/old age, sacred/profane, or male/female some images were made to embody both concepts at once. Because the head is all that survives of this figure, we cannot know if perhaps male and female elements were contrasted in the body or the headdress.

The area surrounding the Gulf Coast of Mexico was the site of the earliest civilization of Meso-America: the Olmec. But after the demise of the Olmec, Veracruz continued to be a fertile ground for cultural development. Classic period Veracruz cultural manifestations include those called “Remojadas”, “El Tajin”, “Panuco”, “Nopiloa”, and others. Although sculptors in clay created an array of small, solid figurines, they are more well-known (and justly so) for their larger figures which were necessarily hollow. Due to burial conditions and the environment of the region, most of the larger figures do not survive intact. Animals and anthropomorphic figures (human or divine) abound. In addition, we find painted and molded vessels that bear resemblances to those of their neighbors, the Maya. The other major oeuvre of the Veracruz people was ballgame paraphernalia. Stone yokes, hachas, and palmas are found in the highest concentration in Veracruz.

My people have lived in the Hawaiian Islands since the time of Papa—Earth Mother—and Wākea—Sky Father. Like many other native people, we believed that the cosmos was a unity of familial relations. Our culture depended on a careful relationship with the land, our ancestor, who nurtured us in body and spirit.

For over one hundred generations, we tended the earth. Then, in 1778, white people arrived on our shores. They brought syphilis and tuberculosis, iron and capitalism. And they also brought violence, the violence of first contact, the violence of plague and death, the violence of dispossession.

By the arrival of the first missionaries in Hawai’i in 1820, more than half the estimated one million Hawaiians present in 1778 were dead from foreign, epidemic diseases. Within another twenty years, the population had been halved again. Conversion to Christianity occurred in the chaos of physical and spiritual dismemberment.

In 1893, the American military invaded Hawai’i, overthrew our chiefly government, and put an all-white puppet government in its place. We were forcibly annexed to the United States in 1898. Hawai’i has been an occupied country ever since.

Still, it’s good that researchers have gone through the records and have definitive evidence. Also great that they’re going to “create a large-scale digital archive to make this history widely available.”
